Langkawi Travel Guide 2025: Beaches, Waterfalls and the Cable Car

10 Feb 2025·7 min read
Beach and jungle scenery in Langkawi, Malaysia

Langkawi is duty-free and pretty. The development around Pantai Cenang is more resort-than-island, but the interior still has waterfalls and jungle roads that justify the trip if you get off the beach strip.

Getting there

Flights from Kuala Lumpur run frequently and take about an hour. Ferries from Penang are the slower alternative but give you a sea crossing view of the north Malaysian coastline.

Where to stay

Pantai Cenang on the west coast is the main hub — bars, restaurants, accommodation at every price point, and beach access. It's the obvious choice for convenience. The beach here is decent for sunsets but has a warning worth knowing: sea lice are a recurring issue, particularly between May and October. Check local conditions before swimming.

If you want quieter, the north of the island (Tanjung Rhu) has emptier beaches and a different pace, but you'll need your own transport.

What to do

The SkyCab cable car from Oriental Village is the most visited attraction on the island — a gondola that climbs to a ridge with views across the islands to the Thai border. Go on a clear morning; cloud cover makes the view pointless.

Seven Wells Waterfall is a 30-minute drive from Pantai Cenang and a short hike from the road. Worth it. The pools above the main falls are less crowded and better for swimming.

The island loop by scooter is the best way to spend a full day — the roads through the jungle interior are quiet, the scenery is good, and you can stop at the mangrove areas, the fish farm, and whatever else catches your attention.

The alcohol situation

Langkawi has duty-free alcohol, which makes it noticeably cheaper than mainland Malaysia or the other islands. If you're spending time in Malaysia more broadly, Langkawi is where to stock up.

Practical tips

  • Scooter rental is widely available and the easiest way to get around
  • Two to three nights is enough
  • Duty-free shopping is genuinely cheap — cigarettes, wine, spirits
  • Check swim conditions at Cenang; sea lice can make the water unpleasant
  • The cable car is popular — book online or go early
