Khao Sok: Jungle Treks, River Swims and Karaoke

15 Sept 2025·6 min read
Dense rainforest and river in Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok came recommended by enough people that we'd built it up in our heads. It mostly delivered. The part we hadn't anticipated was the karaoke.

The trek

We did a full-day jungle trek through the park. The route takes you into the forest interior with regular river breaks — at this point in the trip, swimming in a forest river in southern Thailand didn't feel unusual anymore, which is probably a good sign for the quality of the trip overall.

The wildlife spotting was better than expected. Monkeys in the canopy early in the morning, hornbills, several lizards, and at one point a snake crossing the path that caused a fairly undignified scramble backwards from most of the group. Our guide found this funny.

The heat was significant even for Thailand. Humid rainforest conditions in a way that makes you constantly aware of how much water you're drinking. The river swims weren't optional — they were necessary.

The lake situation

We'd planned to stay on the floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake. By the time we arrived, there was an active wildlife warning due to elephant movement in the area around the lake access point. Tours were still running but the operator was honest about conditions being less than ideal for that time. We took the advice seriously and skipped the overnight lake portion.

Check before you book. The lake is the most-photographed part of Khao Sok for a reason, but it's genuinely weather and wildlife dependent.

The karaoke

Nobody planned for karaoke. The guesthouse had a setup and someone decided to use it. The next two hours were genuinely competitive in a way that surprised everyone involved. It became the thing people talked about for the rest of the trip.

Bring a voice. Or don't, and just watch.

Worth it?

Yes. The jungle trek alone is worth building Khao Sok into a Thailand itinerary. If you get the floating bungalows, even better. Two nights is enough to do both properly.
