Khao Sok National Park is one of the oldest rainforests on the planet — older than the Amazon, by most estimates — and most people visiting Thailand walk right past it. That's a mistake.
Best time to visit
December to April. The dry season gives you clear trails, calm lake water, and conditions where the floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake are actually accessible. The monsoon months restrict lake access and make some trails genuinely hazardous. Come in high season if you can.
Getting there
Fly into either Surat Thani or Phuket depending on which direction you're coming from. From Surat Thani, it's roughly an hour by road. Most guesthouses and tour operators in the park area will arrange transfers if you ask.
Where to stay
Three main options: jungle bungalows along the river near the main park entrance, river camps further into the forest, and floating lake houses on Cheow Lan Lake. The floating bungalows are the obvious drawcard — waking up on the water surrounded by limestone karsts is hard to beat — but they require booking well in advance in peak season and are weather-dependent.
What to do
The jungle trek is the main event. Full-day guided treks take you through the forest interior with river swimming breaks along the way. Wildlife sightings are common — monkeys, hornbills, monitor lizards, and, if you're fortunate, more. Night hikes are offered by most operators and give you a different look at the forest.
Cheow Lan Lake boat tours are the other essential activity — a combination of kayaking through flooded cave systems, swimming in the lake, and taking in the limestone scenery from the water.
A word on safety
Khao Sok has wildlife. That's most of the point. Follow ranger advice on animal encounters, particularly regarding elephants in certain areas — check current conditions before heading out on lake trips if there are warnings in place. Use professional guides for night hikes and any remote routes.
Practical tips
- Book floating bungalows as early as possible — they sell out
- Bring lightweight, quick-dry clothing; humidity is constant
- Mosquito repellent is essential, especially at dusk
- Reef-safe sunscreen if you're swimming in the lake
- Cash only at most operators and guesthouses in the area
